Rice and Kirkham were as interested in Sturgess’s questions as they were in Michael’s answers. They were listening for clues.

‘A towel is something you would have used?’

‘Yes.’

‘Before you got to Mt Isa?’

‘Yes.’

‘And on the occasion of using it, did you see any bloodstaining on it?’

‘Not my towel.’

‘Any other towel?’

‘Not that I recall.’

Kirkham thought, So somewhere there’s blood on a towel.

‘You would have travelled quite a few dusty roads, I take it, going from Ayers Rock and returning.’

‘Yes.’ Michael smiled at what seemed to be a more pleasant turn in the questioning. ‘We tried to avoid as much dust as possible, but we had to.’

‘But the situation is that, back at Mt Isa, you had to clean the car, outside and inside?’

‘True.’

‘And you did not notice any bloodstaining on the outside or the inside of the car, when you so cleaned it? Is that what you say?’

‘That is correct.’

‘Is this the situation: apart from the bloodstaining that was inside the tent, you did not see any other bloodstaining, whatsoever, that could possibly be associated with this matter?’

‘No, I don’t recall having done.’

And Kirkham whispered to Rice, ‘There’s blood in the car, all right.’

‘Have you been in any road accidents in the car?’

‘Yes.’

‘Many?’

‘I think probably three.’

‘Had anybody been injured?’

‘No.’

‘Had anybody suffered any injury in the car which caused bleeding?’

‘Yes.’

‘Who was that person?’

‘There were several. There were my two sons, I recall. Reagan had bled in the car. I think Aidan had a nose-bleed in the car. And. we had at least one occupant in the car who had bled quite profusely as a result of a road accident, who we picked up and took to hospital.’

‘Who was that person? Do you know’

Michael didn’t know, but had a note of the date somewhere. He gave it as 16 June 1979. He and Lindy were trained first-aiders, and had taken the man to the Cairns Base Hospital.

‘And he travelled in the back seat? Front seat? Or where?’

‘As I recall, he was in the back.’

‘What about Aidan, now?’

‘Aidan had a nose-bleed. I don’t know where in the car he would’ve been put. I might add that I think there were others in the car who also bled. Pathfinders, from time to time.’

‘I beg your pardon?’

‘Pathfinders. Young people in the church. That we would fix up.’

‘What, young boys and girls?’

‘Yes.’

‘You say Aidan had a nose-bleed. What happened to him?’

‘I do not recall about him so much. It was mainly Reagan, who bled from the head.’

‘Did you take him to the doctor in the car?’

‘Yes.’

‘Where was he, front or back seat?’

‘I think he was probably in the front seat.’

‘Can you tell me anything else about possible contamination of the outside, or the inside, of the car by blood?’

‘Not within my memory, at this stage. No.’

‘Well, certainly we can be sure of this. There was no bleeding of the baby in the car, was there, that you know of?’

‘Not that I know of. No.’

The last question interested Rice and Kirkham most. They had to face more than blood in the car.
